How Sleep Cycles Work
Sleep is not a uniform state. Throughout the night, your brain cycles through distinct stages of sleep, each serving a different biological purpose. A single sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes and consists of four stages:
Stage 1 — Light Sleep (NREM 1)
This is the transition between wakefulness and sleep. It typically lasts only 1 to 5 minutes. Your muscles relax, your heart rate slows, and you can be easily awakened. You might experience hypnic jerks (sudden twitches) during this stage.
Stage 2 — Deeper Light Sleep (NREM 2)
You spend about 50% of your total sleep time in this stage. Body temperature drops, heart rate continues to slow, and the brain produces sleep spindles — bursts of neural activity that help consolidate memories and block external stimuli.
Stage 3 — Deep Sleep (NREM 3 / Slow-Wave Sleep)
This is the most restorative stage of sleep. Growth hormone is released, tissues are repaired, and the immune system is strengthened. Waking up during deep sleep causes significant sleep inertia — the heavy, groggy, disoriented feeling that can persist for 30 minutes or more.
Stage 4 — REM Sleep
REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is when most vivid dreaming occurs. The brain is highly active, processing emotions and consolidating memories. REM periods get longer as the night progresses, which is why you tend to dream more in the early morning hours.
